Today, Transport Matters Party leader, Rod Barton asked the Premier if the government going to let Uber get away with undermining our state’s conception of an employee and the essential rights that come with it?

Last weekend California voters approved Proposition 22, which will allow Uber and other ‘gig economy’ firms to classify their drivers and delivery personal as independent contractors, rather than employees.

For this to pass, Uber spent $200 million to fight against those individuals who want to basic workplace rights.

The government has acknowledged that we have many individuals in insecure work. During this pandemic, this has been even more obvious as we saw many individuals in the gig economy continuing to turn up to work while sick. It is clear they felt they had no other choice.

So I ask the (Minister/Premier?), is the government going to let Uber get away with undermining our state’s conception of an employee and the essential rights that come with it?
