The heavy rail system is an integral part of Victoria’s transportation mix with the system carrying over 230 million passengers each year (Public Transport Victoria’s Annual Report 16/17).
Currently the system is overcrowded, unreliable and doesn’t meet the public’s expectations. To make sure the network continues to grow, and to future proof it to meet the requirements of the growing population of Victoria more work and better strategies are needed.
- We fully support the building and the continual public ownership of a rail link between Melbourne Airport and Melbourne CBD.
- We fully support the building and the continual public ownership of a high-speed rail link between Geelong CBD, Avalon Airport and Melbourne CBD.
- Government has to explore the available opportunities to increase the amount of intercity and intra-city freight movement on rail.
