According to the City of Melbourne, last year 16% of all vehicle movements into the city in the morning peak period (between 7am and 10am) were bicycles. Just alone Bicycles Network have over 50,000 members Australia-wide. We believe there is a need to improve the infrastructure those riders require, to ensure a safe and enjoyable environment for the riders, pedestrians and motor vehicle drivers equally. Some of the issues that need to be addressed include:
- Safe bike parking facilities should be established at all bus / rail / tram interchanges.
- State and Local Governments need to actively consider bike lanes and appropriate bike specific traffic signals in all planning considerations.
- Support should be given to programs that encourage bike riding, such as Bicycle Network’s Ride2School program.
